All interplanetary travel is facilitated by engineering wonders known as "jump points." These devices, generally built into special take-off sectors of ship docking areas, allow ships to travel at much greater than light-speed, with the effect of "jumping" to other jump point destinations.
Most ships can travel at faster than light speeds, though the travel between planets can still be slow enough to discourage standard, non-jump travel. This is especially true when ships are traveling from the Core planets to the Mid-Ring, let alone the Outer-Ring.
