Marital Status: Single
Home World: Takatifu
Religious Beliefs: No religion, just freedom.
Socio Economic Status: She's part of a scorned House. Every other House on the planet considers them scavengers and thieves which means their lives are forfeit if they get caught on someone else's land. Since everywhere is someone else's land life can be pretty dangerous. Her people are scavengers and find pride in how they live off the bare minimum. So her socio economic status can be considered low. That said, she is the daughter of the founder of her House which gives her a lot of status within her own people.
Cultural Upbringing: Takatifu is a tough place to grow up. Strict cultural rules define the lives of those born there and there is no escaping it unless you want to give up your name (which is everything) and become the scum of the planet. Such people are forced to live on the outskirts of society, stealing from others in order to survive. Children are taught to fear them as examples of failure and to hate them as such as well.
As in all restrictive societies, there are always people that choose that life instead of conforming to the roles society forces upon them. Rayen was one who chose freedom over comfort. Born to a Kozi family, the limits placed on her were stricter than most. Her people prized discipline and restraint very highly and Rayen often found it very difficult to please her instructors or even to agree with them. Possessing a nearly unrivaled talent for finding loopholes, Rayen made it through her training. Practicality, intelligence and a willingness to bend rules to her advantage got her through her trials and she returned to the modest territory her family claimed between the sea and the desert, a woman.
When it came time for her to marry, Rayen tried to choose well. She knew she could not avoid marriage altogether but she hoped to find someone pliant. Safi men are not bred to be weak, weak willed or otherwise, and Rayen waited longer than was completely socially acceptable as she hunted for the right husband. When she did find him he was as yielding as she could hope for and when they established their own territory farther into the desert Rayen finally achieved a level of freedom she had not yet known. Her husband was in love with her and willing to give her anything she wanted but it still wasn't enough and she chaffed in her marriage bonds.
When the Desert Men, a group of bandits in the area, attacked her home and killed her husband Rayen spent months mourning him. Not because she had come to love him, but because of the guilt she felt that his death had freed her. She knew he had deserved more from her and she hadn't been able to give it. Her family gave her the time they felt she needed though they expected her to marry again. Instead, on a day much like any other, Rayen slipped into the desert herself and never looked back.
The next few years were hard but, for once, she was free to determine her own life. The talents that had served her well her entire life continued to do so in her new life and she quickly learned how to survive in the desert on the fringes of society. She began to gather a group of like minded cast offs. At first it was just a gang, then it grew into a sizable group and, eventually, it began to grow into a nation with Rayen at its head.
Rayen had come to hate the way of life she'd been forced to grow up in but she was also practical enough to realize when to play by other's rules. Her people were clever, tough and possessed the pride of those scorned by everyone else but they were also small and criminals under the existing legal code. Every year they grew but only because they were attracting more people than they were losing to murders, raids and small wars by the Houses that surrounded them. In a bid to save her people and make the world a little safer for them Rayen declared them a House in their own right and chose the Hyena, or Kikuto as it was known, as their animal of choice. To this day, their claim has not been recognized by the leadership of the other Houses but they are gaining a level of acceptance at lower levels of society along with a level of notoriety that actually attracts many to their name.
Rayen teaches her people, and especially her daughter, to prize independence and freedom, to live by their own moral code and to stay loyal to their own people. Huria grew up free of many of the restrictions placed on her sisters in other Houses and her independence and creativity were nurtured. But the desert is not a forgiving place and she was also taught respect for the realities of the world and was raised with a willingness to use her ingenuity and intelligence to twist those realities to her advantage.
Physical Description: Huria resembles the hyenas her House is named after. She posses the same air of dangerous irreverence. Her gray eyes always seem to be amused by what is in front of them and it’s just as obvious that her amusement is not always a good thing for you. There is an edge to her that she doesn’t bother to hide and when she smiles at you it can seem menacing or friendly depending on her mood. Her blond hair falls almost to the middle of her back and she’s acquired an odd taste in decoration over the years. Everything from small pieces of carved bone to twisted pieces of metal jewelry and beads can be found braided into it.
Her body is a product of her environment. Strong, wiry and tough, she is perfectly capable of crossing as much as 60 miles of desert a day on foot and winning a few scraps or knife fights with other members of her house before she goes to sleep. Thin scars criss cross her hands though there isn’t as much evidence of old wounds to be found on her actual person, a few, but not many and she moves with the elusive grace of most desert creatures, rejecting wasted movement and wasted effort.
There is no such thing as decorative clothing for people like her. Each article of clothing is a valuable piece of equipment to guard the desert’s many dangers. A skin tight suit very similar to those worn by space farers is worn under all clothing. It helps regulate body temperature and reduces water loss but since it is not completely enclosing as the space equivalents it, alone, is not adequate. What you wear over these suits is your own choice but Huria chooses to wear the loose white clothing that helps reflect the sunlight away. Hoods protect her head and masks protect her mouth and nose while a black paste is applied around her eyes to absorb light when she doesn’t have her protective eye wear on.
Since it is difficult to incorporate decoration into clothing many find other places for it, including Huria. Her hair is one example of this, along with the piercings that can be found high on the edges of both ears, marking her as Kikuto born since such piercings are not popular among the global population and even women who immigrate into the House tend to stay away from them. Huria has also taken to covering her body in the tattoos normally reserved for men. She utterly rejects what she sees as chattel markings, meaning the detailed patterns men’s tattoos follow to denote their life’s achievements and worth to others. But she has chosen a few decorative pieces to be placed on various places on her body, their vibrant colors standing out clearly on her sun tanned skin.
Personality: Huria prizes her freedom and independence above all things, unsurprising considering her upbringing, and she guards it fiercely. She lives by her own rules and it’s hard to pin down her moral code if she even has one. She seems to shift her positions and attitudes as easily as the desert sands and nothing gets past her generally amused outlook on life. She doesn’t take anything too seriously which isn’t to say there is nothing she takes seriously. Everything comes in turns and she takes it all in stride.
She can be fierce in her passions and she tends to enjoy the more visceral things in life. She enjoys working with her hands, fighting, gambling and in general getting into a bit of trouble. But everything is in moderation for her. She avoids too much trouble just as she avoids too little. At the end of the day, Huria is going to do what is best for Huria, then what may be best for her people and maybe what is best for others after that.
Despite what can be seen as a cut-throat attitude Huria makes friends fairly easily. She doesn't have many close ones, and none outside of her own people, but she is easy to get along with and extremely honest, which can be a plus for many. Her life has left her with little patience for illusions or levels of red tape. She knows how quickly situations can change and she tends to enjoy the moments she has to the fullest since there is no telling what is around the corner.
History: Huria was born to Rayen long before Rayen declared them a House. She doesn’t know who her father is and has never much minded that fact. Unlike many of the other Houses, Kikuto is not as obsessed with the genetic history of its people. If a man or woman has survived their very hard life then they have proven they deserve to be there. That’s as far as their considerations go. Huria herself has slept with many of her peers once she came of age and, as of now, has no intention of settling down with anyone.
She came of age at Rayen’s knee which means she knows about as much about her House and their dealings and problems as Rayen herself. Far from being isolated and ignorant, the Kikuto people always have their ear to the ground and are always looking for opportunities to improve their lot. Huria has been heavily involved with the illegal trading that runs through her tribe and has had more contact with outsiders than most Safi. For this reason she’s fluent in Common and decent with a few other languages she’s come in contact with.
She also knows the surrounding Houses extremely well and can impersonate them fairly accurately. Kikuto has never taken a person from a House against their will despite the rumors of baby stealing. But they will often infiltrate festivals and local gatherings. Their House has the allure of freedom and excitement that many used to attach to the circus or the gypsies. Huria has lured many young people away from their responsibilities to seek a life out in the desert. Not all stay but most do.
