Disclaimer: I'm aware that this is apparently also the title of a novel by Orson Scott Card. The reference is not intentional.
Earthfall
"Yeah, I saw it, damn it. Was watching through my telescope. Can't say why they call it Earthfall though. Ain't nothing that fell. It was just there, and then -- then it wasn't." - Phaestus citizen
"It was the UIR, those pigs! They killed it! They killed Earth! Now they'll see -- sovereignty for every planet!" - Rebel group leader
"No comment. I'm a scientist, not your fucking clergyman. Get that camera out of my face. No comment!" - Ortho astronomist
"Earthfall" is the name given to the event that set off a chain of catastrophes. Earth, in its entirety, suddenly vanished on one day of the 3642nd year of the galactic calendar. The wavering peace that the United Interplanetary Republic did its best to uphold was shot to pieces.
The Republic declared open warfare against any secessionist planets, announcing that the destruction of Earth was at the hand of Mid and Outer-Ring rebels. The more extremist rebel governments in league against the UIR immediately countered that the Republic itself had destroyed Earth, in order to frame those who sought sovereignty. Other theories about alien and android conspiracies abounded, and xenophobia quickly spiked across the human population in many planets.
Within hours, the destruction was already horrific: several planets had been irreparably destroyed -- either blown apart by the UIR's incredibly deadly weapons in an attempt to counterattack, or too heavily irradiated to support life aftar a barrage of nuclear warheads. Alien governments, enraged at the loss of their ambassadors, refused to aid the UIR. Most withdrew any of their support, whether scientific or military, eager to get out from between the human race as it turned in on itself.
For some individuals, Earthfall has an even greater meaning. At the time of Earth's disappearance, they recieved strange, unprecedented powers.
